This is my dad Shane. If you look closely, you can see the scar/gap in the side of his head. In 2008 my dad a brain aneurysm, that was found on April 11th. It started out with excruciating headaches and then a tingling feeling in his arm. He told my grandmother (his mom) about these symptoms, and she took him to the ER. The doctor did a brain scan and found the aneurysm, larger than the common aneurysm. His doctor decided to fly him to a better hospital to receive treatment. As he was in surgery after an hour of flying, they opened up his skull to realize the aneurysm had ruptured and were barely able to fix it in time. The pressures in his brain increased after his surgery so his Neurosurgeon decided to take him back to the operating room. As they opened him up again they were able to decrease pressure on his brain but in the meantime a clot had formed and caused him to have a stroke, leaving prognosis uncertain.
My dad has been through so much since that day. He had his skull flap removed, he has had multiple seizures, been to over 4 hospitals, lost movement in his right arm and leg, lost all capability of speech and was at rehab for up to a year.
Four years later and my dad is now in speech therapy being retaught how to speak, physical therapy teaching him how to walk again and how to make his right leg function and occupational therapy to help him regain capability of his arm.
My father who didn’t remember when me when he woke up, now remembers things from my toddler days. He is my hero, my best friend, my dad and my inspiration. He pushes everyday against those odds to become the man he was before. Although physically changed, my dad is still the same person he was before.
I love my dad with all my heart and I honestly don’t know what I would do without him. He perseveres through everything he does and doesn’t ever give up. Some days he gets a little down knowing that he can’t be like the rest of us but I know he can get back to how he was before.
